NVIDIA is moving beyond supplying the chips inside AI data centers.
It is increasingly helping secure the infrastructure around them.
The company has reached an agreement with SB Energy covering the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio, where NVIDIA will become the exclusive AI compute infrastructure provider and OpenAI will be the customer.
The initial deployment is designed for 4.25 IT-GW of AI factory capacity, while NVIDIA has an option covering another 3.75 IT-GW.
That puts the potential campus at 8 IT-GW.
NVIDIA Is Securing Land and Power
The unusual part of the deal is NVIDIA’s role.
The company is providing credit support for the land, power and shell infrastructure behind the initial 4.25 IT-GW deployment.
SB Energy will build, own and operate the data center under a 20-year lease to OpenAI.
NVIDIA will also invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy.
That shows how dramatically the AI infrastructure bottleneck has changed.
GPUs remain scarce and expensive, but possessing the chips means little if there is nowhere with sufficient power to operate them.
OpenAI Gets An 8-GW AI Factory
OpenAI is expected to use the site’s capacity, with the AI factory built around NVIDIA’s DSX platform spanning GPUs, CPUs and networking.
Initial capacity is expected to begin coming online in phases in 2028.
SB Energy and SoftBank also plan at least 10 gigawatts of new energy generation to support 8 IT-GW of AI factory capacity.
Another $4.2 billion is planned for regional grid infrastructure.
AI Infrastructure Is Becoming Vertical
The biggest AI companies increasingly cannot depend on traditional data center development cycles.
Compute requirements have become too large.
That is pushing companies deeper into power procurement, land, financing, construction and grid infrastructure.
NVIDIA’s involvement in PORTS-Pike illustrates just how far that vertical integration can go.

NVIDIA’s competitive advantage increasingly extends beyond making the GPU.
The company is helping secure the physical environment required to operate enormous fleets of those GPUs.
An 8-IT-GW campus is not simply another data center.
It is industrial infrastructure built around AI.
And NVIDIA putting $1.5 billion into SB Energy suggests the company believes controlling access to land, power and data center capacity could become almost as strategically important as controlling access to compute itself.
