Microsoft and Mistral Bring Sovereign AI and New Infrastructure to Europe

Microsoft and French AI company Mistral are expanding their strategic partnership to strengthen Europe’s AI infrastructure and give enterprises more options for deploying AI across cloud, hybrid and disconnected environments.

The expanded agreement includes a multibillion-dollar investment to increase AI compute capacity in Europe, deeper integration of Mistral’s large language models into Microsoft’s AI platform, and new deployment options designed for organizations operating in highly regulated industries.

The announcement reflects growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure as governments and enterprises seek greater control over where AI models run, how data is processed and how regulatory requirements are met.

Microsoft and Mistral Expand European AI Infrastructure

As part of the agreement, Microsoft will use Mistral’s expanding GPU infrastructure to increase AI computing capacity across Europe.

Mistral plans to deploy thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs to support AI model training, inference, and enterprise deployments. Microsoft said the additional infrastructure will help meet growing demand for cloud and AI services while supporting its European Digital Commitments.

The companies said the investment strengthens Europe’s AI ecosystem while providing organizations with greater access to high-performance AI computing resources.

Mistral Models Come to Microsoft AI Platforms

Microsoft is also expanding support for Mistral’s AI models across its enterprise AI portfolio.

Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available through Microsoft Foundry, allowing developers to build and deploy AI applications using Microsoft’s development environment. Mistral Medium 3.5 is also being added to Microsoft Copilot Studio, giving organizations additional model options for AI-powered business applications.

According to the companies, the integration allows enterprises to build AI applications using consistent tools while selecting deployment models that best fit operational, regulatory and business requirements.

Focus on Sovereign AI and Regulated Industries

A central goal of the partnership is to support organizations that require greater operational control over AI systems.

Microsoft said Azure and Azure Local will allow customers to deploy Mistral models across cloud, cloud-connected and fully disconnected environments using a common operating model. The approach is intended to simplify AI deployment for industries such as financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and critical infrastructure, where data sovereignty, resilience and regulatory compliance are significant considerations.

The companies said customers will be able to maintain a consistent development experience while choosing deployment environments that align with security and operational requirements.

Joint Enterprise AI Strategy

Microsoft and Mistral also announced plans to expand their joint go-to-market strategy.

The companies will collaborate on enterprise AI deployments through proof-of-concept programs, Azure credits and customer workshops aimed at accelerating AI adoption across Europe and other global markets.

The expanded partnership highlights Microsoft’s continued investment in offering customers a broader selection of AI models while strengthening regional AI infrastructure outside the United States.
