Standard Chartered is expanding its long-term partnership with Broadcom to modernize the infrastructure behind its global banking operations, deploying a software-defined private cloud platform designed to improve security, resilience and operational consistency across 54 markets.
The bank is using VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), Broadcom’s private cloud platform, as the foundation for core banking, payments and digital services. The move comes as financial institutions increasingly invest in private cloud infrastructure to support growing cybersecurity demands, stricter regulations and AI-driven operations.
Standard Chartered Modernizes Global Banking Infrastructure
Standard Chartered said roughly 70% of its global infrastructure now operates on the VMware Cloud Foundation platform, creating a standardized private cloud environment that supports banking services worldwide.
According to the companies, the platform embeds zero-trust security directly into the infrastructure while reducing the time required to deploy new infrastructure from several weeks to approximately one day.
The modernization effort is intended to improve operational resilience while simplifying infrastructure management across the bank’s international operations.
“Standardizing a fully virtualized software-defined infrastructure across our global operations enables Standard Chartered to meet the evolving demands of our clients while strengthening our technological core with the responsiveness, resilience and regulatory compliance that global banking demands,” said John Sharratt, Global Head of Technology and Infrastructure at Standard Chartered.
VMware Cloud Foundation Supports Secure Private Cloud Strategy
Broadcom said VMware Cloud Foundation provides a unified private cloud platform that integrates virtualization, networking, storage and security into a single software-defined environment.
The platform is designed to help organizations maintain always-on operations while supporting increasingly automated and AI-enabled workloads.
As banks modernize legacy infrastructure, many are shifting toward private cloud architectures that provide greater control over sensitive financial data while meeting compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
“Global financial institutions require infrastructure that combines resilience, security and operational simplicity at scale,” said Krish Prasad, senior vice president and general manager of the VMware Cloud Foundation Division at Broadcom.
Banking Industry Continues Shift Toward Private Cloud
Financial institutions continue investing heavily in infrastructure modernization as digital banking, real-time payments and AI applications place greater demands on availability, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance.
Private cloud environments remain a common choice for banks that require greater control over sensitive workloads while maintaining consistent operations across global data centers.
Standard Chartered said the expanded deployment establishes a foundation for future innovation while supporting long-term growth across its international banking business.
The Bottom Line
Banks are modernizing the technology behind core financial services as cybersecurity threats, regulatory requirements and AI adoption continue to increase. Standard Chartered’s expanded use of VMware Cloud Foundation highlights how large financial institutions are investing in secure private cloud infrastructure to improve operational resilience, accelerate deployment and support next-generation digital banking services.
