Enterprise teams increasingly expect AI systems to do more than summarize a document or answer a question. The harder problem is moving from research to action: gathering information, producing a usable report or application, coordinating work across approved business tools and completing follow-up steps without forcing employees to shuttle among separate systems.
That gap creates a practical target for agentic AI. A system that can combine cited research, document creation, application development, connected-service access and scheduled work could reduce the manual handoffs that often slow market analysis, routine reporting and operational follow-up. The challenge, however, is giving such systems enough access to be useful while preserving organizational control over data, permissions and actions.
Perplexity has documented Computer, an autonomous AI worker designed to carry out multistep tasks rather than only return answers. The company says Computer can research information across the web and a user’s work context, create documents and applications, manage email, and run tasks on a schedule.
The product combines several capabilities that have typically been delivered separately: search and research, tool execution, media and document creation, application connectors, persistent context, scheduling and a cloud-based sandbox. Perplexity positions Computer as a worker that can operate across connected services rather than as a standalone chatbot.
For enterprise users, the most notable capability is the ability to connect research and execution. Perplexity says Computer can use authenticated integrations with services including Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion, Snowflake, Databricks and Salesforce. A user could, for example, request research on competitors, a comparison of pricing, a slide presentation and an email to a team in one workflow.
Computer can also run work asynchronously, according to the company. Perplexity says users can set scheduled jobs and condition-based triggers tied to email, calendars, files or other monitored information. That approach could make the product relevant to recurring activities such as market briefings, deadline reminders and routine analysis, though organizations would need to determine which workflows are appropriate for an agent with access to connected business services.
The company describes a multi-agent architecture in which specialized assistants handle work such as market research, financial analysis, news monitoring and coordination. Its documentation says the product can conduct parallel web searches and synthesize information from multiple sources, while a personal cloud sandbox is intended to isolate files and agent activity.
Those features also introduce the governance questions that will shape enterprise adoption. Computer’s documentation cautions that changes made in connected applications remain in place if a task stops before completion. It also says users should check live-system work before continuing a paused task. That distinction matters for IT leaders evaluating where agentic systems can act autonomously and where human review, scoped permissions and audit controls remain necessary.
Computer is available on paid Perplexity plans, with limited trial access for some free accounts, the company says. The service runs primarily in a cloud sandbox, although Perplexity also describes a Portable Computer option for supported NVIDIA hardware that keeps the model, orchestrator, scheduler and sandbox on a user’s own device.
Perplexity is joining a growing push to turn AI from an information interface into a workflow participant. Its success will depend less on the breadth of the agent’s promised capabilities than on whether enterprises can deploy those capabilities with the reliability, access controls and operational accountability expected of systems that can act across business tools.
