In a new company blog post, Microsoft argues that traditional security approaches were built for human-driven attacks and are no longer sufficient in an era where AI systems can reason, adapt and launch attacks at machine speed. The company says organizations must prepare for autonomous threats while also using AI to strengthen their own security operations.
Microsoft describes AI as fundamentally changing the economics of cybercrime. Attackers can generate exploits more quickly, automate phishing campaigns and scale operations at a fraction of previous costs. At the same time, businesses face growing complexity as AI agents gain access to enterprise applications, data and infrastructure.
To address these challenges, Microsoft outlines a security strategy centered on identity, continuous verification and AI-native defense. The company says future security platforms must be able to monitor AI agents, evaluate their actions in real time and automatically respond to emerging threats.
Microsoft also highlighted Project Perception, its AI-powered cybersecurity platform that combines specialized security models with large language models to help identify vulnerabilities, analyze threats and assist security teams with incident response. The company says the technology is designed to help defenders keep pace with increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled attacks.
